9/11

My head is not full of historically relevant dates.

I'm the person who has to think twice to be sure I recall the birthdays of our children correctly.

I set alarms on my phone to remind me to put things in and take things out of kitchen appliances.

This, however, is one day I will never forget.

May the Lord grant us beauty from ashes.

The Reward is Greater

                                       
These hands are so cute.

Her smile is adorable.

Her voice is sweet.

She sleeps and eats in a somewhat predictable nature.

But...

There is nothing cute about foster care.

Not an adorable piece of background history.

No sweet reason this girl or any child comes into state custody.

Each case is somewhat  unpredictable.

Did you know...

The need for loving homes is great {just try to wrap your mind around about half a million children}.

The cost {and I'm not talking $$$} of loving these children and their families  is great.

But...

The reward is greater.

Matthew 6

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, ²⁰ but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. ²¹ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

⁴⁴ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
⁴⁵ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
⁴⁶ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Hope

It is hard to know what to hope for.

I hope our kiddos get healthy quickly.  But, I enjoy quiet days here with the four of them.

I hope Jon gets home from work by dinner.  But, his work is what provides our dinner and he may work late {thanks, Honey}.

I hope we don't fall too far behind in our school work.  But, loving on a new addition to our family and sick kids is more important today.  {I hope I remember this.}

I hope Mt. Laundry will fold itself.  But, we all know that won't happen.  If it does, I hope dinner makes itself too. :)

I hope Baby J's parents are able to get on their feet.  But, I would be happy to call her mine.

What are you hoping for?  

See, hoping can be tricky, because hoping is unpredictable.  Hopes unfulfilled can feel like a rug ripped right from beneath you.  Hopes can be followed by exceptions and  "but_{fill in the blank}___."

I really don't know what to hope for.  Starting this foster care journey has proven that again.  But, I know Who to hope in.  And this hope is secure - no "buts" here in Hebrews 6:

¹⁷ So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, ¹⁸ so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. ¹⁹ We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, ²⁰ where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

And this.  Just this...

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
